A garage door opener that works most of the time but not reliably is often more frustrating than one that's fully stopped — especially when the failure happens at night or in bad weather. Opener problems range from simple sensor misalignment to a failed logic board, and diagnosing them correctly at the start saves you the cost of replacing parts that weren't the actual problem.

Common Opener Problems We Fix

Safety Sensor Misalignment

The two sensors at the bottom of your door tracks need to face each other directly. A bump from a bicycle, a yard tool, or just settling can knock them out of alignment. The door will reverse before closing or refuse to close at all, and you'll usually see a flashing light on the opener unit. This is often the easiest fix — but it gets misdiagnosed as a more expensive problem.

Stripped Drive Gear

Chain, belt, and screw-drive openers all have a plastic drive gear that meshes with the motor. This gear wears down after years of use, and when it strips, the opener runs but the door doesn't move — you hear the motor but nothing happens. We replace the gear directly without swapping the whole opener in most cases.

Logic Board Failure

The logic board controls all the opener's functions — remote reception, sensor processing, limit settings. When it fails, symptoms can look like almost anything: random operation, no response to remotes, or the door reversing for no apparent reason. Logic board replacements are available for most major brands.

Remote or Wall Button Issues

Sometimes what looks like an opener problem is a dead remote battery, a worn wall button switch, or a receiver that's stopped picking up the correct frequency. We test these systematically before assuming the opener itself has failed.

Limit Switch Problems

Limit switches tell the opener where "open" and "closed" are. When they drift, the door either reverses before fully opening or closes past the floor and strains the motor. Adjusting them is usually straightforward but needs to be done carefully to avoid creating new problems.

Brands We Service

We repair openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Stanley, Wayne Dalton, Overhead Door, Sears, and other major brands sold in Connecticut. We carry common replacement parts including logic boards, drive gears, remotes, and safety sensors for the most widely-used models.

Opener Repair vs. Replacement

If an opener is over 12–15 years old and the repair cost approaches half the replacement price, a new opener often makes more sense — especially since newer units include battery backup, smartphone connectivity, and improved safety features. We'll give you both options with honest pricing so you can decide.

Sensor realignment$65–$120
Drive gear replacement$100–$180
Logic board replacement$120–$250
New opener installation$250–$500
