When a garage door spring breaks, the door typically stops mid-travel, feels impossibly heavy when lifted manually, or sits crooked. The loud bang you may have heard — often mistaken for something falling in the garage — is the spring snapping under tension. This is the single most frequent garage door repair call we receive across Connecticut, and it's one that should only be handled by someone with the proper tools and training.

Broken spring? Don't force the door open.

Types of Garage Door Springs

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs sit horizontally above the garage door opening, mounted on a steel rod. They work by twisting (torquing) to store energy as the door closes, then releasing it to help lift the door. Most modern residential doors use one or two torsion springs. They're rated for roughly 10,000 cycles — around 7–10 years with typical use.

Extension Springs

Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door and stretch to store energy. They're more common in older Connecticut homes and on lighter one-car doors. When an extension spring breaks, the cable on that side goes slack and the door drops or hangs at an angle. These also require a safety cable to prevent the spring from becoming a projectile if it snaps.

Why Springs Break

Springs have a finite cycle life and eventually fail through metal fatigue — it's not a defect, it's just how springs work. In Connecticut, the wide temperature range between January and July accelerates wear on springs that aren't rated for high-cycle use. Corrosion from humidity and road salt in coastal and southern Connecticut is another factor that shortens spring life.

Should You Replace One Spring or Both?

When one spring on a two-spring system breaks, the other is usually close to the same age and cycle count. Replacing both at the same time is generally the more practical choice — the labor cost is nearly identical, and it prevents a second call-out in a few months when the second one goes. We'll show you both options and let you decide.

Spring Replacement Cost in Connecticut

Single torsion spring$150–$250
Pair of torsion springs$225–$350
Extension springs (per pair)$120–$220
High-cycle upgrade springs$250–$400
Spring costs depend on the door's size and weight, the spring wire gauge required, and whether high-cycle springs are selected. Price includes parts and labor. We quote before we start.
